Overview

The גמרא explains which days get the full הלל. Every day of סוכות has different offerings, so each day gets הלל, while the days of פסח are all the same. Testing this, it adds that the day must be called a מועד (which rules out שבת) and must have work forbidden (which rules out ראש חודש). ראש השנה and יום הכיפורים pass every test but are left out, because רבי אבהו teaches that joyful song does not fit a day of judgment. חנוכה gets הלל for its miracle, and the גמרא gives three answers for why פורים does not: the miracle was outside ארץ ישראל, the מגילה reading is its הלל, or we were still servants of אחשורוש. Then it returns to the משנה's flute and explains that חליל and אבוב are one instrument. A ברייתא tells how the old reed flute, copper cymbal and copper mortar of the מקדש worked worse when changed or repaired, and how the שילוח spring gave less water when widened. The amud ends with teachings about instruments in the מקדש: the הרדולים, which was not used, and the מגריפה, whose description continues on the next amud.
