The end of רבי מאיר's rescue story, the ban on stadiums, theaters and circuses as מושב לצים, and the severity of scoffing
Overview
This amud finishes the story of רבי מאיר rescuing the daughter of רבי חנינא בן תרדיון. He proves to the guard that saying 'אלהא דמאיר ענני' brings protection, and later those words save the guard from hanging. The Romans then hunt רבי מאיר. The גמרא gives two versions of how he escaped, and he finally flees to בבל. Next, a ברייתא calls stadiums and besiegers' camps a מושב לצים that leads to ביטול תורה. The גמרא resolves a contradiction with another ברייתא: for the camp it splits the cases, and for stadiums it says the two follow different תנאים, with רבי נתן permitting. A dispute between רבי מאיר and the חכמים about theaters and circuses matters for doing business there. The amud then lists the harsh punishments for scoffing and explains the opening פסוקים of תהלים. A new reading by רבי יונתן begins and continues on the next amud.
