Smell and taste from forbidden wine and vinegar: bread near a barrel, נותן טעם לפגם with split beans, ריש לקיש's two definitions of a spoiling taste, and מלקות for taste together with substance

Overview

The amud opens in the middle of a defense. An אמורא protects his own ruling about wine whose smell reached something through an opening in a barrel. He shows that the earlier dispute about bread and wine barrels covers only the in-between cases. Everyone forbids hot bread near an open barrel, and his case is like that one. The גמרא then turns to the משנה's rule that food is forbidden only if the forbidden item improves its taste, and רב יהודה in the name of שמואל rules that this is the הלכה. שמואל limits the rule. Vinegar that falls into hot split beans spoils them, so they stay permitted. Vinegar that falls into cold beans first improves them, so they are forbidden even if heated later. רבין and רב דימי report the same limit from רבי יוחנן, and רב דימי adds that people in ציפורי made this dish every ערב שבת. ריש לקיש is quoted in two opposite versions on whether a badly seasoned dish can count as spoiled by the forbidden taste. Finally, רבי יוחנן rules that a mixture holding both the taste and the substance of a forbidden food brings מלקות, if one eats a כזית of it within כדי אכילת פרס.
