רב פפא's smaller-than-promised field, brothers dividing an estate by lottery, and a third brother who returns after the division (רב vs. שמואל)

Overview

This amud starts by finishing the story of רב פפא, who bought a field that the seller called 'twenty גריוי' but that measured only fifteen. אביי rules that רב פפא knew the field and accepted it as it was. He answers רב פפא's two challenges: the משנה about a shortfall of a sixth covers only a buyer who did not know the field, and the seller's 'twenty' meant 'as good as twenty'. Next comes a ברייתא of רבי יוסי: when brothers divide an estate by lottery, all of them acquire once the first lot is drawn. רבי אלעזר learns this from the dividing of ארץ ישראל by lottery. When that comparison is challenged, רב אשי explains instead that the brothers' agreement with each other makes the lottery work. Then רב and שמואל argue about two brothers who divided an estate before a third brother came back from overseas. רב cancels the division and שמואל keeps it, with each brother giving up a share. The גמרא defends רב against רבא's challenge about three partners. It then raises a challenge against שמואל from the case of selling a כור of grain, and this challenge continues on the next amud.
