Reading the ביכורים passage, who owns new growths from a tree in someone else's field, and how much land comes with buying three trees
Overview
The amud opens by finishing the reason why someone bringing ביכורים from trees he may not fully own does not read the ביכורים passage: the Torah requires that one person both take and bring the fruit. רב אחא בריה דרב אויא asks why he can't just read the verses anyway. רב אשי answers that it would look like a lie, and רב משרשיא says people might come to exempt the fruit from תרומה and מעשר. Next the גמרא asks what counts as growth 'from the trunk' versus 'from the roots.' רבי יוחנן says growth that sees the sun is from the trunk, and growth hidden underground is from the roots. The tree owner must still cut low growths, so that sediment can't later make them look like extra trees that would give him land. רב נחמן's tradition that 'a palm has no trunk' is explained by רב זביד as the owner giving up on it, and by רב פפא as palms simply not sprouting from the trunk. Finally the גמרא asks how much land a buyer of three trees gets, and רבי יוחנן begins to answer: under them, between them, and some land outside them, which continues on the next amud.
