Drained drops and the storekeeper on ערב שבת, and a child sent shopping who breaks the jug and loses the change
Overview
This amud opens with a question from a משנה about תרומה, which says that the drops drained from a tilted vessel count as תרומה. The answer, in the name of רבי אבהו, is that in an ordinary sale the seller keeps those last drops only because the buyer gives up hope on them (יאוש בעלים). Next, the גמרא asks whether רבי יהודה's ruling about a חנווני on ערב שבת is a קולא or a חומרא. A ברייתא shows it is a חומרא: the storekeeper is excused only at nightfall on ערב שבת, because he is busy then. Then a new משנה brings a new case. A father sends his young son to a storekeeper, and the boy breaks the jug and loses the change. The חכמים make the storekeeper pay, and רבי יהודה exempts him. The גמרא asks why the storekeeper should pay for a jug the father himself gave to a child. רב הושעיא and then רבה and רב יוסף each explain the case, but each explanation is challenged. The amud ends as אביי בר אבין and רבי חנינא בר אבין begin a new explanation, which continues on the next amud.
