רבא asks רבה בר מרי for the scriptural sources of many popular sayings, from eating early in the morning to 'like seeks like' and more.
Overview
This amud is a long series of questions from רבא to רבה בר מרי. Each time, רבא names a popular saying and asks which פסוק it comes from. It opens with the end of an earlier answer: the מצורע must announce 'Unclean, unclean,' which shows that poverty follows the poor. Next comes the advice to get up early and eat. רבה בר מרי brings a פסוק from ישעיה, and רבא brings one from the תורה: prayer, then bread with salt and water, which removes bile and its 83 illnesses. Many more sayings follow, each matched to a פסוק: accepting the label others give you (הגר), saying your own flaw first (אליעזר), being humble while looking ahead (אביגיל), and the pain of being left out of a meal (נתן, and אברהם marrying קטורה). Others are credit going to the one who pours (משה and יהושע), hunger making bitter things sweet, and like seeking like, which is shown from the תורה, נביאים, כתובים, a משנה and a ברייתא. The amud closes with sayings about giving up on someone who ignores you, not harming a well you drank from, sharing a burden (ברק and דבורה), and being honored when young but treated like a child when old. The answer to that last saying finishes on the next amud.
