An אריס's duties: replanting, the planting season, disaster discounts, paying rent from the field's crop, and switching crops
Overview
This amud opens by closing an earlier challenge with קשיא, which means it stays unanswered. Two ברייתות disagree on how many times an אריס must replant a ruined field. The גמרא explains that they follow רבי (a חזקה is set after two times) and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל (three times). ריש לקיש limits this to crops that sprouted and were eaten by locusts. If nothing sprouted, the farmer keeps planting all season, which רב פפא says ends when כימה is overhead. A ברייתא listing six seasons seems to contradict רב פפא, and the גמרא answers that he is talking about late crops. Next, רבא gives a money renter a discount for a מכת מדינה and sets aside רבי יהודה's opposite view. A new משנה teaches that wheat rent is paid from the field's own wheat. The גמרא limits this to cases where the land itself failed at its job. A final משנה forbids switching to a crop that is harder on the field, and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל forbids any switch. רב חסדא bases that view on keeping one's word, and a challenge from the פורים collection begins and continues on the next amud.
