Overview

The משנה lists cases where, unusually, בית שמאי are lenient and בית הלל are strict. These are an egg laid on יום טוב, the amounts of שאור and חמץ on פסח, and covering the blood after slaughtering on יום טוב. The גמרא first asks what kind of hen laid the egg, and concludes it must be a hen kept for laying eggs, so the egg is מוקצה. That raises the question of why בית שמאי permit it, especially since the egg is also נולד. רב נחמן answers that whoever holds of מוקצה also holds of נולד: בית שמאי follow רבי שמעון (lenient) and בית הלל follow רבי יהודה (strict). The גמרא challenges him, because on a משנה about bones and shells on שבת he placed בית הלל with רבי שמעון. The answer is that on שבת a סתם משנה follows רבי שמעון, so he matched בית הלל to it there.
