Taking wood from a סוכה on יום טוב: the משנה's rule, רבי שמעון's view, and why a condition cannot free the wood of a סוכה built for the חג, which stays holy for all seven days.

Overview

The משנה rules that on יום טוב you may not take wood from a סוכה, only from wood near it. The גמרא asks why taking the nearby wood is not also taking apart a tent, and שמואל and רב מנשיא each define 'near' so that it is not part of the structure. A ברייתא then shows that רבי שמעון permits taking wood even from the סוכה itself. רב נחמן בר יצחק explains that רבי שמעון means a סוכה that already fell and was shaky, so nothing is taken apart and the owner had its wood in mind before יום טוב. The ברייתא also says everyone forbids the wood of a סוכה built for the חג, unless the owner made a condition. The גמרא asks how a condition can work, since a פסוק makes the סוכה holy 'to ה׳' for all seven days. רב מנשיא בריה דרבא answers that the condition only works for an ordinary hut, and אביי and רבא explain that a condition on decorations works only by stopping holiness from ever starting. Finally, the גמרא explains that unlike the אתרוג, whose מצוה stops each night, the סוכה's seven days count as one long day.
