Acts forbidden on שבת and יום טוב (רשות, מצוה, שבות), the difference between יום טוב and שבת, and how belongings follow their owner's תחום
Overview
The amud continues the משנה's list of acts that are forbidden on שבת and יום טוב. The גמרא explains why קידושין, חליצה and יבום can be called 'רשות' (optional). It says the 'רשות' acts are forbidden in case a person comes to write. It says הקדש, ערכין and חרמים are forbidden because they look like buying and selling. רב יוסף explains that separating תרומות is forbidden even when the portion is for a כהן that day. The גמרא adds that חלה may be taken from dough made on יום טוב. רבי יצחק then shows that all three lists are שבות, arranged in a 'לא מיבעיא' build-up. Next the גמרא sets our משנה against a משנה that allows lowering produce through a skylight on יום טוב. רב יוסף's answer, which splits the two between רבי אליעזר and רבי יהושע, is rejected by אביי. רב פפא's answer stands: our משנה follows בית שמאי and the skylight משנה follows בית הלל. Finally a new משנה teaches that animals and objects may go only where their owner may walk on יום טוב, and the גמרא begins to discuss it.
