Overview

רבא rules that on יום טוב ראשון only non-Jews handle a burial, but on יום טוב שני Jews may do it themselves. This applies even to ראש השנה, though an egg laid on the first day of ראש השנה stays forbidden on the second day. The נהרדעי disagree about the egg, because since עזרא's time אלול has never been made 30 days long. מר זוטרא limits burial on יום טוב שני to a burial that was already delayed. רב אשי says we never postpone it, because for a מת the Rabbis treated יום טוב שני like a weekday, and רבינא adds that nowadays the danger from the חברי holds us back. A story follows: רב אשי forgot his עירובי תבשילין before a Thursday-Friday ראש השנה, and he explains that רבא's תנאי does not work there, since he does not accept the נהרדעי's view. Finally, רב forbids a chick that hatched on יום טוב as מוקצה, while שמואל (or רבי יוחנן) permits it. רב is challenged with a newborn calf and with a calf born to a טריפה, and רבה gives the answer רב could have given. אביי's reply begins and continues on the next amud.
