Prepared materials for כיסוי הדם on יום טוב: loose earth, stove ashes, earth brought in before יום טוב, and the כוי challenge

Overview

The גמרא finishes explaining how one may dig with a דקר to cover blood on יום טוב. The earth is loose (עפר תיחוח), so nothing is crushed. The hole left behind does not matter either, because following רבי אבא, a hole dug only for its earth is פטור. Next, רבה explains that the משנה's mention of stove ashes (אפר כירה) is an extra ruling: ashes also count as prepared. רב limits this, and a ברייתא backs him up. Ashes count as prepared only if the fire was lit before יום טוב, unless they are still hot enough to roast an egg. The גמרא then teaches that earth brought in before יום טוב is prepared, and רב יהודה allows a basketful to be used for all needs. מר זוטרא adds that this holds only if it was kept in a set-aside corner. Finally, the גמרא defends רב יהודה against a challenge from the כוי. It explains that the כוי case speaks of someone with no prepared earth, and that it teaches that even a doubtful obligation to cover blood is not pushed aside by שמחת יום טוב.
