Separating חלה on יום טוב, and whether מראית העין bans apply in private (the dovecote ladder משנה)
Overview
The amud opens with a ruling that if dough was kneaded on ערב יום טוב, its חלה may still be separated on יום טוב. אבוה דשמואל disagrees and forbids it. The גמרא suggests that שמואל argues with his father, since שמואל lets one eat bread from חוץ לארץ first and separate the חלה afterward. רבא answers that even שמואל agrees that once dough is named חלה it is forbidden to non-כהנים, so he may agree with his father after all. Then a new משנה begins: בית שמאי forbid carrying a ladder from one dovecote to another on יום טוב, and בית הלל permit it. רב חנן בר אמי first says the dispute is only in public, about מראית העין, and that everyone permits it in private. The גמרא challenges this with רב's rule that מראית העין bans apply even in the most private room, and answers that תנאים argue about that rule. A second version puts the dispute in private, which seems to make רב follow בית שמאי. The same ברייתא about drying wet clothes shows that רב follows other תנאים instead.
