Mistakes in the עמידה, the meaning of קבע, short prayers in danger, and תפלת הדרך
Overview
The amud opens by finishing an answer about someone who forgot to ask for rain: he goes back to the start only if he remembers after שומע תפלה. Next, רבי יהושע בן לוי rules that someone who forgot יעלה ויבא on ראש חודש goes back to עבודה, unless he already finished, in which case he starts over. רב פפא, citing a tradition from רב, explains that 'finished' means he already moved his feet. רב נחמן בר יצחק adds, in two versions, that it also depends on whether he usually says תחנונים after davening. The גמרא then explains רבי אליעזר's word קבע in the משנה in several ways: a burden, not said as a plea, nothing new added, or not praying at דמדומי חמה. Praying at that time is a מצוה, but in ארץ ישראל they cursed it for fear of missing the time. Next comes the meaning of פרשת העבור and several versions of the short prayer for a dangerous place, and רב הונא rules like אחרים. Finally, אליהו's advice leads to the obligation and full text of תפלת הדרך, and אביי begins a statement that continues on the next amud.
