בית שמאי and בית הלל on the order of ברכות over wine, the cup for ברכת המזון, and washing hands before mixing the cup.
Overview
This amud first finishes an earlier point: a ברייתא that rules like בית הלל after the בת קול still had to say so, because it follows רבי יהושע, who says we ignore a בת קול. The גמרא then challenges בית שמאי's rule that ברכת היום comes before the wine. A ברייתא about הבדלה puts the wine first. The גמרא proves that this ברייתא is really בית שמאי's, following רבי יהודה's report of their argument. It answers that בית שמאי treat bringing in שבת differently from taking it out: we bring it in as early as possible and take it out as late as possible, so שבת should not feel like a burden. Next it asks whether בית שמאי require a cup for ברכת המזון, and works through a chain of short questions about tasting the wine and the cup's minimum amount. A ברייתא of רבי חייא forces the conclusion that two תנאים report בית שמאי differently. Finally, the גמרא explains the argument about washing hands before or after mixing the cup. Both sides worry about impurity passing through liquid, and the explanation continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
וְרַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ הִיא,
And it is (the view of) Rabbi Yehoshua,
דְּאָמַר: אֵין מַשְׁגִּיחִין בְּבַת קוֹל.
who said: We do not pay attention to a heavenly voice.
וְסָבְרִי בֵּית שַׁמַּאי
And do Beit Shammai hold
דְּבִרְכַּת הַיּוֹם עֲדִיפָא?
that the blessing of the day takes priority?
