The flame blessing at הבדלה, returning to bentch, the time limit for ברכת המזון, answering אמן, and washing and oil before ברכת המזון
Overview
This amud finishes פרק אלו דברים. It first explains the משנה's rule that one blesses over the הבדלה flame only when one can benefit from its light. רב says potential benefit is enough, even from a distance, and the גמרא defends him against a ברייתא by explaining that 'seeing without using' means a fading flame. A ברייתא then rules that glowing coals qualify but dimming coals, עוממות, do not. רבא disagrees with רב and requires actual benefit, measured by telling coins or weights apart. Each אמורא acted on his own view, and we learn that one need not search for a flame. Next the גמרא limits the dispute about returning to bentch to someone who forgot, and adds stories of reward for going back. It then sets the time limit for bentching by digestion and discusses answering אמן, including whether blessing or answering is greater and whether to answer schoolchildren. The chapter closes with oil and washing the hands before ברכת המזון.
