Topic

The value of the צבור and the בית הכנסת: praying with the congregation, places of learning, and conduct around קריאת התורה.

Overview

The amud opens with the power of praying with the צבור. The time when the congregation prays is an 'עת רצון', and God does not reject the prayer of the many. ריש לקיש warns that someone who has a shul in his city but does not go in is a 'שכן רע'. רבי יוחנן learns that people in בבל live long because they come early and stay late in shul. רב חסדא says to go in the distance of two doorways before praying. Then the גמרא lists several readings of 'לעת מצא': a wife, תורה, death, burial and the bathroom, and in ארץ ישראל they preferred מר זוטרא's bathroom reading. Back on the shul, רב חסדא and עולא teach that ה׳ loves places of הלכה learning most, so אביי, רבי אמי and רבי אסי davened where they learned. עולא also praises one who lives from his own work and advises living near one's רב, if the student listens to him. The amud ends with rules about the Torah reading: not walking out on the ספר תורה, and reading the weekly פרשה twice with the תרגום once.
