בית שמאי's reasoning about an עם הארץ's vessels and טומאת מת, when an עם הארץ is trusted about immersion, and the משנה's extra stringencies for קודש over תרומה.

Overview

The amud opens by finishing בית שמאי's reasoning: the עם הארץ's food and earthenware vessels are called pure only for his own sake, but vessels a חבר might borrow are not. רבי יהושע objects sharply, and a student of בית שמאי explains their reason. An impure vessel cannot block טומאה, and an עם הארץ would never listen if told his vessel is impure. רבי יהושע then apologizes at the graves of בית שמאי and fasts for the rest of his life. Back in the main discussion, the גמרא explains that a חבר immerses whatever he borrows, but that does not help for טומאת מת, which takes seven days to remove. It then asks when an עם הארץ is trusted about טבילה, with answers from אביי (body versus vessels, with trust only at the end of the process) and רבא (a simple denial versus a technical claim). Next the גמרא explains the משנה's terms 'back and inside' and בית הצביטה. It discusses רב ביבי's ברייתא and רבה בר אבוה's teaching that six of the eleven stringencies apply to חולין שנעשו על טהרת הקודש. Finally it starts explaining why one carrying a מדרס may not carry קודש, through a story told by שמואל that continues on the next amud.

But shall we declare pure the vessel,

שֶׁטׇּהֳרָתוֹ לְךָ וָלוֹ?

whose purity is for you and for him?
