Topic

The warning not to touch the שלחן and מנורה after the רגל, which vessels need טבילה, and how the gold-coated wooden שלחן can become טמא.

Overview

This amud finishes the משנה. Every vessel in the מקדש had backups, and all of them needed טבילה after the רגל except the two מזבחות. רבי אליעזר says the מזבחות are like the ground, and the חכמים say they are exempt because they are coated. The גמרא brings a ברייתא that also warns against touching the מנורה. Our משנה leaves the מנורה out because only the שלחן has ״תמיד״, and the two sides argue about whether ״נכח השלחן״ gives the מנורה ״תמיד״ too. The גמרא then asks how a wooden table that stays in one place can become טמא at all. It answers with ריש לקיש: the שלחן was lifted to show the pilgrims the miracle of the לחם הפנים, which stayed fresh all week. Next the גמרא asks why the gold coating alone does not decide the שלחן's status. Two answers fail according to רבי יוחנן: that acacia wood is too valuable to be cancelled, and that the coating was not fixed. The גמרא begins a new answer, ״the שלחן is different″, which continues on the next amud.

שֶׁלֹּא תִּגְּעוּ בַּשֻּׁלְחָן.

that you not touch the table.

כׇּל הַכֵּלִים שֶׁהָיוּ בַּמִּקְדָּשׁ

All the vessels that were in the Temple

יֵשׁ לָהֶם שְׁנִיִּים וּשְׁלִישִׁים,

had second and third ones,

שֶׁאִם נִטְמְאוּ הָרִאשׁוֹנִים —

so that if the first ones became impure —
