Topic

Separating meat and cheese (cleaning the mouth and waiting time), checking one's property, and the rules of washing hands before and after a meal.

Overview

The amud opens by explaining what בית שמאי and בית הלל mean by wiping the mouth (מקנח) and rinsing it (מדיח) between meat and cheese. After two explanations are rejected, the גמרא concludes that both sides require both, so there is no real argument. It then examines רבי זירא's rule that wiping is done with bread and adds several limits: wheat, cold, and soft. The final הלכה, though, is that almost any food works for wiping, except flour, dates, and vegetables. Next, רבי יוחנן rules that no waiting is needed after cheese before meat. רב חסדא rules that after meat, cheese is forbidden, and that meat stuck between the teeth still counts as meat. מר עוקבא describes waiting from one meal to the next, and his father's full day. The shared phrase 'vinegar, son of wine' then leads to שמואל's advice to check one's property daily, which the stories of אביי and רב אסי confirm. Finally, the גמרא turns to washing hands at a meal: מים ראשונים are a מצוה and מים אחרונים a חובה. It then covers where the water may land and whether it may be hot or cold, and רבי ינאי begins a limit that continues on the next amud.
