רבי's ruling about animals found slaughtered, the שחיטה of a חרש, שוטה, and קטן, whether שחיטה needs כוונה, and whether a קטן has legally meaningful מחשבה
Overview
The גמרא first finishes explaining רבי's statement about the argument between רבי יהודה and רבי חנינא בנו של רבי יוסי הגלילי. Each sage agrees with the other in one case: everyone follows רבי יהודה for a trash heap in the marketplace, and everyone follows רבי חנינא for a trash heap in the house. Next, the גמרא goes back to the משנה about a חרש, שוטה, and קטן. From the words 'שמא יקלקלו' (lest they ruin, in the future), רבא learns that we do not give them animals to slaughter לכתחילה. The משנה adds that if others watched them, their שחיטה is כשרה. The גמרא asks who holds that שחיטה needs no כוונה. רבא answers that it is רבי נתן, based on a ברייתא about a thrown knife, and the one who taught that ברייתא ruled הלכה כרבי נתן. The גמרא explains how a thrown knife could move back and forth: it bounced off the wall and came back. Finally, רבי יוחנן asks whether a קטן's מחשבה counts, and רבי אמי objects that a משנה about shells hollowed out by children already settles it. That משנה continues on the next amud.
