Whether מתנות כהונה can be claimed: defending רב חסדא's exemption, רב's doubt about a לוי, and the sources for the gifts to the poor
Overview
This amud keeps testing רב חסדא's rule that someone who destroys or eats מתנות כהונה does not have to pay, because no single כהן can claim them. The גמרא first finishes an earlier answer: in that case a specific כהן already owned the טבל. Then it pushes away three more challenges. In the first, the king's men seize a threshing floor to pay a debt, and the owner must tithe only because he benefited. In the second, a משנה about buying a cow's innards deals with gifts that are still intact. In the third, a list of nine 'נכסי כהן' only means a כהן may use those items like his own money. Next comes a story about a לוי who snatched the gifts. רב's reaction is explained as coming from his doubt whether לוים count as 'עם'. רב אידי בר אבין challenges this from a ברייתא about gifts for the poor and the מתנות כהונה. Before explaining that challenge, the גמרא gives the פסוקים behind the vineyard gifts, and it starts on the grain gifts, which continue on the next amud.
