Who receives מתנות כהונה (a כֹּהֶנֶת), which animals owe them (כלאים and כוי), and the משנה on exemptions from the gifts
Overview
This amud opens with עולא defending his practice of giving מתנות כהונה to a כֹּהֶנֶת. He argues that the מנחה passage had to say 'אהרן ובניו' to limit itself to males. Two ברייתות disagree. דבי רבי ישמעאל leaves out a כֹּהֶנֶת, and דבי רבי אליעזר בן יעקב includes her through מיעוט אחר מיעוט. Several אמוראים ate the gifts through their wives, and מרימר rules that the הלכה follows רב, רב חסדא and עולא, as well as רב אדא בר אהבה about a לויה's son. Next a ברייתא asks whether the gifts apply to a כלאים animal and a כוי. רב הונא בר חייא says the חכמים require only half the gifts because of the doubt about the father. רבי יוחנן says a כוי owes all the gifts, since the word 'אם' includes it directly. Finally a new משנה teaches cases where the gifts are not owed. The first is a בכור mixed in with one hundred animals, and the גמרא begins to challenge that ruling.
