Which מצוות partners owe according to רבי אלעאי, and how far ראשית הגז is compared to תרומה
Overview
The גמרא explains why partners still owe several מצוות, even though רבי אלעאי exempts partners from ראשית הגז. For מזוזה, מעשר, ביכורים, ציצית and מעקה, a פסוק says 'your' in the singular, but another word shows that partners are included. Each singular word then gets its own job, like leaving out a partnership with a גוי, produce from outside ארץ ישראל, a borrowed טלית, or a בית כנסת. For מתנות כהונה, the גמרא concludes that partners' duty is learned from תרומה, and זובחי הזבח teaches that the כהן collects from the butcher. Then רב ביבי בר אביי and רב חנינא מסורא reject these rules, showing from ברייתות that רבי אלעאי also exempts partners from בכורה, מתנות and even תרומה. A ברייתא shows that רבי אלעאי limits מתנות and ראשית הגז to ארץ ישראל, and רבא explains that he learns ראשית הגז from תרומה through the shared word 'giving.' אביי tests how far this comparison goes: some rules of תרומה do not carry over to wool, but the ban on giving from new for old does. The amud ends with אביי challenging the comparison from our משנה about buying a גוי's sheep, and רבא's answer continues on the next amud.
