How the bird עולה is pinched and where each of its rules comes from; then the right ages for תורין and בני יונה
Overview
This עמוד finishes a ברייתא about מליקה, the way a כהן kills a bird קרבן by pinching its neck. רבי אלעזר ברבי שמעון compares the bird עולה to the bird חטאת: the blood is sprinkled while the head is still attached. The word ״וְהִקְרִיבוֹ״ shows that the עולה still needs two סימנים cut, not one. The גמרא then explains why the תנא קמא also needs ״וְהִקְרִיבוֹ״, even though he learns his rule from ״וּמָלַק וְהִקְטִיר״. Next it looks at the rules the תנא קמא learns from the חטאת בהמה. The חולין rule comes from ״אֲשֶׁר לוֹ״. The daytime rule was only listed in passing. The right hand is needed here because the word כהונה alone is not enough. The other תנאים learn the back-of-the-neck rule by comparing the word מליקה in both cases. Then a new משנה teaches that grown תורין and young בני יונה are fit, and the in-between age is unfit for both. Finally, a ברייתא starts to show why the פסוק is needed to rule out young doves. That discussion continues on the next עמוד.
Opening lines
אוֹחֵז בָּרֹאשׁ וּבַגּוּף וּמַזֶּה,
[just as there, by the bird sin offering] he holds the head and the body and sprinkles,
אַף כָּאן אוֹחֵז בְּרֹאשׁ וּבַגּוּף וּמַזֶּה.
so too here [by the bird burnt offering], he holds the head and the body and sprinkles.
