The dispute between רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש about a thought from one עבודה to another, and רב ששת's challenge from רבי יוסי's קל וחומר.

Overview

The גמרא first finishes explaining the three opinions in the משנה about slaughtering for a gentile. The תנא קמא does not learn ordinary slaughter (חוץ) from קדשים (פנים). רבי אליעזר does learn it. רבי יוסי holds that even with קדשים, one person's thought cannot ruin another person's act. Next, רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש argue about someone who slaughters an animal planning to sprinkle its blood or burn its fat for עבודה זרה. רבי יוחנן forbids it, because a thought about a later עבודה counts and we learn חוץ מפנים, while ריש לקיש permits it. They argue the same way about a קרבן slaughtered לשמה with a plan to sprinkle its blood שלא לשמה. The גמרא explains why both arguments had to be recorded. Then רב ששת challenges them from רבי יוסי's קל וחומר in the משנה. He shows how one half of it hurts ריש לקיש and the other half hurts רבי יוחנן. Finally רב ששת answers his own challenge: רבי יוסי was talking about a wrong thought during the ארבע עבודות. The rewording of רבי יוסי's קל וחומר continues on the next עמוד.
