The categories of טרפות, רבי יוחנן's rulings on the gallbladder, liver and gizzard, and holes in the layers of the gullet and gizzard
Overview
The amud opens by finishing an earlier count of the טרפות in the משנה. עולא then teaches that all טרפות fit into eight basic types told to משה at סיני, and חייא בר רבא says the type called נקובה has eight cases. He explains that the perforated gallbladder is only the view of רבי יוסי ברבי יהודה. Next comes a series of rulings from רבי יוחנן. The הלכה follows רבי יוסי ברבי יהודה on the gallbladder, since איוב survived only by a miracle. On a removed liver, a כזית must remain, and the גמרא shows that his students report his view differently. Two more rulings follow: a pierced gallbladder sealed by the liver is kosher, and a pierced gizzard with its inner lining whole is kosher. The גמרא then discusses organs with two layers, including the gullet's red outer layer and white inner layer, and holes in both layers that do not line up. Finally רבה teaches that a scab over a hole in the gullet does not count as a covering, and that the gullet must be checked from the inside. The amud ends by asking when that last rule makes a practical difference, and the answer comes on the next amud.
