Identifying the inner כרס, measuring tears and holes in the outer כרס, and a needle in the בית הכוסות
Overview
The amud opens by finishing the true version of רב נחמן's ruling. The spot where the rectum is attached can be completely removed and the animal stays כשר, as long as a finger's width is left to grip. The גמרא then asks which part of the stomach is the משנה's כרס הפנימי. Many opinions are given: the סניא דיבי, the opening of the rumen, a 'narrow place', the area without 'wool', a טפח of the ושט, the whole כרס, and the מפרעתה that butchers expose. נהרדעא followed רבה בר רב הונא's מפרעתה. אמימר explains to רב אשי that most of the other opinions fit inside it, and only רבי אבינא and the scholars of ארץ ישראל truly disagree. Next, רבי אלעזר explains that the משנה's 'large' and 'small' do not mean kinds of animals. A tear in the outer כרס makes the animal a טריפה once it reaches either a טפח or most of the כרס, whichever comes first. A round hole only counts as a טריפה if it is bigger than a סלע, and רב יוסף measures this with date pits. Finally, a ברייתא about a needle in the wall of the בית הכוסות begins, and it continues on the next amud.
