Bird species and names: the תסיל, the צוצייני doves and names with an added description (שם לווי), and a series of rulings on kosher, forbidden, and doubtful grasshoppers and birds.
Overview
The גמרא first asks why a משנה about מי חטאת names only the יונה as an exception and not the תסיל. רבי זירא answers that the תסיל spits water back and the יונה does not. Next, רב יהודה rules that the צוצייני doves may be brought on the מזבח. A משנה about אזוב seems to disqualify anything with an added name, and אביי and רבא each answer this. Then come rulings on which grasshoppers and birds are kosher, many with memory signs. רב אסי lists eight doubtful birds whose gizzard peels only with a knife, and the גמרא contrasts them with a duck whose gizzard peeled by hand after softening in the sun. Later rulings deal with the swamp rooster and swamp hen, the מרדו, and birds named after wicked people or wine. שמואל's last ruling continues on the next amud.
