Overview

The amud opens by finishing רבה's lenient ruling about a broken bone covered by sinews that will later harden. רב פפא objects that ריש לקיש disagrees and a Torah איסור is at stake, and רבה falls silent. The גמרא explains why: here רבי יוחנן himself retracted in favor of ריש לקיש. Next comes a real case of a broken, exposed bone with a chip missing. אביי held off ruling, but רבא ruled that it makes no difference as long as most of the bone is covered. The sages then ask what kinds of damaged flesh still count as covering the bone, and they resolve the case of flesh cut like a ring. A new משנה teaches the laws of a שליא found in a slaughtered animal, one that partly came out, and one that was dropped. The גמרא finds a פסוק for the rule and calls part of it an אסמכתא. It then begins a question about a cooked donkey hide, which continues on the next amud.
