אותו ואת בנו: including כלאים through או, and whether the איסור applies to males
Overview
The גמרא asks whether the איסור of אותו ואת בנו (slaughtering an animal and its offspring on the same day) applies to כלאים, a cross between a sheep and a goat. רבא teaches that the word שה always leaves out כלאים. The גמרא answers that the extra word או in the פסוק brings it back in. The גמרא defends this twice: the teaching that each animal counts on its own comes from בנו, and the ברייתא's teaching comes from אותו. For חנניה, who uses אותו for something else, no פסוק is needed, because he holds like רבי יונתן. A ברייתא about cursing one's father and mother shows that for רבי יונתן, 'and' already means each one alone. The גמרא then explains the מחלוקת: the רבנן say אותו ואת בנו applies only to females, while חנניה says it applies to males too. The רבנן learn their view from a comparison to שילוח הקן, backed up by the word אותו (one parent, not two). The word בנו shows that this one parent is the mother, whom the young follows.
Opening lines
זֶה בָּנָה אָב –
This established a paradigm:
כׇּל מָקוֹם שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר ״שֶׂה״
wherever 'seh' is stated,
אֵינוֹ אֶלָּא לְהוֹצִיא אֶת הַכִּלְאַיִם.
it comes only to exclude the mixed breed.
אָמַר קְרָא ״אוֹ״
The verse says 'or'
