The גיד הנשה איסור on the offspring of קדשים, and whether the sinews of an עולה go up on the מזבח
Overview
The משנה teaches that the גיד הנשה איסור applies even to the offspring of consecrated animals (מוקדשין). The גמרא first concludes that in a fetus, the איסור of מוקדשין comes first. It answers that גיד הנשה can still take hold because it is broader: it applies even to בני נח. That reasoning belongs to רבי יהודה, and our תנא agrees with him on this point while disagreeing about the two thighs. But the גמרא rejects this answer, since a rule shown for a non-kosher animal does not prove anything about קדשים, which carry כרת. Instead it explains that the משנה is talking about a בכור, which becomes holy only at birth, or that the babies of any קדשים become holy only at birth. Next, רבי חייא בר יוסף and רבי יוחנן argue whether the גיד איסור applies to קדשים that are not eaten, like an עולה. רב פפא settles their argument in two versions, while רב נחמן בר יצחק says they truly argue about bringing the גיד up on the מזבח. The גמרא then brings ברייתות about which bones and sinews of an עולה go up on the מזבח, and it begins explaining why רבנן and רבי read the פסוקים differently.
Opening lines
אַלְמָא אִיסּוּר מוּקְדָּשִׁין קָדֵים!
Evidently, the prohibition of consecrated animals comes first!
אַף עַל גַּב דְּאִיסּוּר מוּקְדָּשִׁין קָדֵים,
Even though the prohibition of consecrated animals comes first,
אָתֵי אִיסּוּר גִּיד חָיֵיל עֲלַיְיהוּ,
the prohibition of the sinew comes and takes effect on them,
שֶׁכֵּן אִיסּוּרוֹ נוֹהֵג בִּבְנֵי נֹחַ.
since its prohibition applies to descendants of Noah.
