Overview

The עמוד opens by finishing a list from the previous עמוד: three good things the nations of the world still keep. The גמרא then returns to the משנה. It explains that birds are exempt from גיד הנשה because their thigh bulge is not rounded. רבי ירמיה asks about a creature that breaks its species' pattern, and that question ends in תיקו. Next, שמואל says the משנה's words 'its fat is permitted' are agreed by everyone. The גמרא asks which fat he means. It rejects the fetus's fat, which רבי מאיר forbids, and concludes he meant the fat around the גיד, which רבי מאיר forbids only מדרבנן, as shown from two ברייתות. רב and עולא then argue whether the Torah forbade the main גיד or only its thin branches, and אביי supports עולא from the strands inside חלב. Finally, the גמרא discusses the white fat of the kidney. אביי begins a proof from שמואל for רבי אסי's lenient practice, and the proof continues on the next עמוד.
