רבי's ruling about meat in gentile butcher shops, and רב's rule that meat which went out of sight is forbidden
Overview
The amud opens at the end of a story about a quarrel. A butcher claims that the meat his rival got through a gentile came from a טְרֵפָה ox. רבי refuses to forbid all the butcher shops because of one fool, which fits his rule: where the butchers are Jewish, meat found with a gentile is permitted. In a second version, the butcher only said this to hurt his rival. The גמרא explains that this version needs that reason because here a forbidden sale had been put on record. The גמרא then brings רב's rule that meat which went out of sight is forbidden, and tests it against several sources. It answers some by saying the meat was found in a gentile's hand or was watched the whole time. For the last source, רב reads 'permitted' as meaning only free from נבלה status. Finally, the גמרא reveals that רב's rule was only inferred, and begins the story of רב at the river, which continues on the next amud.
