The end of פרק עושין פסין (ביטול רשות of the house according to רבי אליעזר and the רבנן, and ערקבלין for מרור) and the opening משנה of בכל מערבין (which foods and places work for an עירוב).

Overview

This amud opens at the end of a sugya. Two משניות seemed to contradict each other, and the answer is that one follows רבי אליעזר and the other follows the רבנן. רב ששת explains their dispute: for רבי אליעזר, someone who does ביטול רשות on his share of the חצר also gives up his house; for the רבנן, he does not. The גמרא asks why this needed saying (פשיטא). It answers with a case of five residents where one forgot to join the עירוב: for רבי אליעזר he need not give up his rights to each person separately, and a ברייתא saying this follows רבי אליעזר. A second version (רב טביומי's) attributes this connection to רב ששת himself. רב פפא then asks אביי what happens if a person openly says the opposite of each view's default, and אביי answers that a clearly stated intention always counts. The chapter closes with the משנה's teaching that ערקבלין may be used for מרור, ending פרק עושין פסין. A new chapter, בכל מערבין, begins: an עירוב may be made with any food except water and salt, and the food need only be fit for someone, with סומכוס and רבי יהודה adding their own views.
