What may be bought with מעשר שני money: הבלעה, בן בג בג's דרשה of ״בבקר״, and ריבוי ומיעוט versus כלל ופרט
Overview
The amud opens by limiting an earlier ruling: water and salt may be bought with מעשר שני money only when oil was mixed in, and the price of the water and salt was folded into the price of the oil (הבלעה). The גמרא proves that הבלעה is allowed from a ברייתא of בן בג בג, who learns from the פסוק that one may buy an ox with its hide, a sheep with its fleece, and wine with its jug. רבי יוחנן says he would carry the clothes of anyone who could explain the word ״בבקר״ according to בן בג בג. The גמרא shows why: every other word in the פסוק is needed. But once ״צאן״ allows even fleece, an ox with its hide is obvious, and no answer is found. The גמרא then explains the dispute about what may be bought with מעשר שני money. רבי אליעזר and רבי יהודה בן גדיש read the פסוק with ריבוי ומיעוט, which includes almost everything. Other תנאים read it with כלל ופרט, which includes only things similar to the listed items. אביי says fish are the difference between two ברייתות that describe those items differently. The amud ends as the גמרא begins to challenge אביי from another statement of his, which continues on the next amud.

It was only necessary

where he put oil into them.
אֲמַר לֵיהּ אַבָּיֵי:
Abaye said to him:
וְתִיפּוֹק לֵיהּ מִשּׁוּם שֶׁמֶן!
But let him derive it because of the oil!
The steps (29)
- ResolutionThe ruling applies only when oil was added
- Challengeאביי asks why the oil alone isn't the reason
- ResolutionHe paid for the water and salt inside the price of the oil
- QuestionIs folding the price in actually allowed?
- ResponseYes, proven from בן בג בג's teaching
- Statementרבי יוחנן praises whoever can explain 'on oxen'
- ResponseWhy רבי יוחנן was puzzled: every word is needed except 'on oxen'
- QuestionAsking why the other words are necessary
- ResponseAn ox alone would not teach a sheep with its fleece
- ResponseA sheep alone would not teach wine with its jug
- ResponseWine alone would not teach fermented תמד
- ResponseStrong drink alone would not teach wine with its jug
- ResponseIf only wine were written, a sheep with its fleece would not be allowed
- ChallengeThen why is ״בבקר״ needed?
- ResolutionA suggested answer: without ״בבקר״ we would read ״צאן″ as hide only
- RejectionRejecting the suggestion: the תורה would have written only ״בקר״
- ChallengeThe question returns: ״בבקר″ is still extra
- Conclusionרבי יוחנן: no one can explain ״בבקר״ for בן בג בג
- QuestionWhat is the root of the disagreement?
- ResponseTwo different ways of reading the verse
- StatementReading the verse as include, exclude, include
- QuestionWhat does the inclusion cover?
- ResponseWhat does the exclusion leave out?
- ProofA ברייתא reads the verse as general, specific, general
- StatementOnly things similar to the listed items
- StatementAnother ברייתא: offspring of the offspring of the earth
- QuestionWhat is the difference between the two descriptions?
- Responseאביי: fish are the difference
- ChallengeDid אביי really say fish grow from the ground?
