Carrying beyond one's תחום (זריקה versus משיכה), the pen and stable dispute, and why a boat is treated leniently

Overview

This amud continues the discussion of רב הונא's view that a person may not throw objects into an area where he himself may not walk. A ברייתא seems to permit carrying throughout a city even when the person's limit ends in the middle of it. רב הונא answers that this means pulling objects toward himself, not throwing. רב הונא adds that if the limit ends mid-courtyard, the person may still carry in his half, and we do not worry that he will carry in the rest. רב נחמן says that even רב הונא permits carrying throughout a house when the limit ends at the roof's edge, because the roof edge acts like a wall. רב הונא בריה דרב נתן tries to link the dispute to the משנה about a person placed in a pen or stable, but the גמרא rejects both sides of that comparison. רב rules like רבן גמליאל in a pen, a stable, and a boat, while שמואל rules like him only on a boat. רבה and רבי זירא give different reasons why a boat is lenient. The גמרא begins to explain why רבי זירא rejects רבה's reason, and that explanation continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

הָיָה מוֹדֵד וּבָא,

If he was measuring as he went,

וְכָלְתָה מִדָּתוֹ בַּחֲצִי הָעִיר —

and his measurement ended in the middle of the city —

מוּתָּר לְטַלְטֵל בְּכׇל הָעִיר כּוּלָּהּ,

he is permitted to carry throughout the entire city,

וּבִלְבַד שֶׁלֹּא יַעֲבוֹר אֶת הַתְּחוּם בְּרַגְלָיו.

provided that he does not cross the limit with his feet.
