The rules of פסק (רבי יוסי vs. רבי יהודה, and רב משרשיא's statement), and whether a נכרי's objects acquire שביתה, applied to the case of the rams in מברכתא.
Overview
This amud opens in the middle of a ברייתא. רבי יוסי says a כהן may leave ארץ ישראל to learn תורה from the teacher who suits him, and he backs this with the story of יוסף הכהן going to צידן. רבי יוחנן rules like רבי יוסי. The גמרא asks why this ruling was needed, and אביי answers that it extends the general rule to disputes found in a ברייתא. The גמרא then concludes that רב משרשיא only meant that the rules of פסק are not accepted by everyone, since רב did not follow them. Next, שמואל rules that a נכרי's objects do not acquire שביתה. After a challenge from a ברייתא, the גמרא places שמואל with the רבנן and explains that he is teaching that there is no גזירה. רבי יוחנן disagrees and holds that there is such a גזירה. In a practical case about rams brought to מברכתא, רבא first ruled leniently. רבינא challenged him, since the הלכה follows רבי יוחנן, so רבא allowed only the people of מברכתא to buy them. The amud ends with the start of רבי חייא's ברייתא about a water-filled ditch between two תחומי שבת, which continues on the next amud.
