Partitions and ladders between a מרפסת and a חצר, the שיור left out of a city's עירוב, and a new משנה on placing a עירוב for walking on שבת
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a ברייתא about a מרפסת and a חצר that did not make an עירוב. The גמרא deflects it by explaining that the case is a low מרפסת, fenced except for an opening of up to ten אמות, which a small partition cuts off. רב יהודה in the name of שמואל rules that a wall lined with ladders still counts as a מחיצה. רב ברונא challenges this from another statement of שמואל, and the same answer resolves it. Next comes the story of אביי making an עירוב for קקונאי, where he goes back and forth on whether the שיור (the section left out of a city's עירוב) must be a place that could have joined. He finally learns from פומבדיתא that it need not. The גמרא then explains the משנה's measure 'like חדשה', the views of רבי שמעון and רבי יצחק on the size of the שיור, and אביי's lesson that learning is not just a song. Finally a new משנה begins about a person whose house and עירוב lie in opposite directions, and about where an עירוב may be placed. That last case continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
וְלֹא עֵירְבוּ,
and they did not make an eiruv,
אִם יֵשׁ לִפְנֵיהֶם דַּקָּה אַרְבָּעָה —
if there is a partition of four [handbreadths] in front of them,
אֵינָהּ אוֹסֶרֶת,
it does not prohibit [the courtyard],
וְאִם לָאו — אוֹסֶרֶת.
and if not, it prohibits.
