Making an עירוב with a גוי through his שכיר or לקיט; respect for Torah teachings; wine, הוראה and תפילה; keeping a גר's property
Overview
The amud opens in the middle of a discussion about a מבוי shared by Jews and a גוי. רבא knocks down a suggestion to let the Jews carry without an עירוב, and then each fix offered for it: a reminder עירוב, and a public announcement. His solution is that one Jew borrows a spot in the גוי's property and so becomes like the גוי's שכיר or לקיט. Following שמואל's ruling, such a worker may give the עירוב in the גוי's place, and רב יוסף adds that this leniency never becomes a stringency. רב נחמן praises that ruling of שמואל but calls a different one, about not ruling after a רביעית of wine, 'not excellent'. רבא rebukes him for grading Torah teachings, and רב נחמן takes it back. רבה בר רב הונא then rules on praying after drinking: a שתוי's prayer still counts after the fact, but a שיכור's prayer is תועבה. A story of two scholars parting at a river gives the test: whether he could speak before a king. It also gives a second teaching, that one who takes a גר's property should buy a ספר תורה with it. רב ששת's addition to that teaching continues on the next amud.
