Wine and character; which תנא רב's courtyard ruling follows; renting a גוי's rights from a landlord and on שבת
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a teaching that wine flowing freely in a home is a sign of ברכה. רבי אילעאי adds that a person's true character shows in his cup, his pocket and his anger, and some add his laughter. The גמרא then returns to עירובין with רב's case: a Jew and a גוי live in an inner courtyard, a Jew lives in the outer one, and carrying is forbidden. The גמרא tests which תנא רב follows. It rejects רבי מאיר and רבי אליעזר בן יעקב, then challenges רבי עקיבא's rule of the 'foot'. רב הונא בריה דרב יהושע settles it: רב follows both רבי אליעזר בן יעקב and רבי עקיבא, in a case where the two Jews made an עירוב, so only the גוי forbids. רבי אליעזר asks about the reverse case, with the גוי in the outer courtyard, and רב rules strictly. Two inn stories follow about renting a גוי's rights: from a landlord when the tenant is away, which רבי אפס approves, and on שבת itself, which the Sages dispute. In the second story the Sages bring the question to רבי יוחנן, whose answer continues on the next amud.

If [wine] flows in his house like water —
אִיכָּא בְּרָכָה,
there is blessing,
וְאִי לָא — לָא.
and if not — [there is] not.
