Partnerships in wine and oil for a שיתוף: connection of liquids, ברירה, and relying on a שיתוף in place of an עירוב
Overview
רב יוסף explains the משנה's dispute about a partnership in wine and oil. He says it is the same argument as the one between רבי יוחנן בן נורי and the רבנן: whether oil floating on wine counts as connected to it. Next, a ברייתא brings רבי אליעזר בן תדאי, who requires an עירוב even when both partners share wine. רבה explains that everyone agrees wine poured from each partner's jug into one barrel works. The argument is only about a barrel bought together, and it depends on ברירה. רב יוסף instead says the argument is whether we may rely on a שיתוף in place of an עירוב. He proves this from רב, who ruled like both רבי מאיר and רבי אליעזר בן תדאי. אביי asks why רב needed two rulings, and the answer is that in עירובין we do not take on two stringencies automatically. The גמרא then quotes the ברייתא of רבי מאיר and the חכמים, and רבי נחומי and רבה begin to argue about when that dispute applies. The second opinion comes on the next amud.
