Whether רב יהודה's lenient ruling on a מבוי that ends in a רחבה can follow רב, given רב's own stricter ruling on a מבוי breached into a חצר
Overview
On the previous amud, אביי asked רב יוסף whose view רב יהודה followed when he ruled that a מבוי ending in a רחבה needs nothing more to permit carrying. The גמרא explains that if the ruling is רב's, then רב seems to contradict himself. רב ruled that a מבוי breached along its whole width into a חצר, with the חצר breached opposite it, is אסור. Why not treat that מבוי like one ending in a רחבה? רב יוסף answers that he does not know the source. He only knows of a real case in a shepherds' village where רב יהודה required nothing. So the ruling can simply be credited to שמואל, and there is no difficulty. The גמרא then uses רב ששת's distinction between a case with an עירוב and a case without one. With it, the גמרא shows that רב does not contradict himself: when the חצר and מבוי residents made a joint עירוב the מבוי is permitted, and when they did not it is forbidden.
