Drinking and carrying between domains: the winepress, gutters and pipes, cisterns and garbage heaps, and a tree's branches
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a proof from the משנה's words 'וכן בגת' (the same applies in a winepress). The proof tried to show that one may not stand in a רשות הרבים and drink from a כרמלית. רבא and רב ששת reject the proof: the line is about מעשר, and it follows רבי מאיר's view in a משנה about drinking at the winepress without tithing. A new משנה follows. It allows catching rainwater from a gutter but not pressing against it, because a gutter within three טפחים of the roof counts as the roof. Two ברייתות support this, and a תוספתא adds that a pipe four by four טפחים is its own domain. Next comes a משנה about drawing water from a cistern, or pouring water onto a garbage heap, through a window when the cistern or heap stands ten טפחים high in the street. רב הונא and רבי יוחנן explain the cistern case differently. The גמרא answers a worry that the heap may be removed by distinguishing a private heap from a public one. The amud ends with a משנה about carrying under a tree with drooping branches. רב הונא בריה דרב יהושע limits that permission to בית סאתים, and the reason for the limit comes on the next amud.
