A קורה that is distanced from the walls (לבוד and חבוט), and whether carrying is permitted in the space between the לחיים and under the קורה

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a ברייתא about a קורה that is drawn away from the walls of a מבוי or suspended between them. If the gap is under three טפחים, the קורה is still valid because of לבוד. According to רבן שמעון בן גמליאל, the gap may be anything under four. The גמרא first tries to read the ברייתא against רבא, but answers that both cases are inside the מבוי: one has a gap on one side and the other has gaps on both sides. רב אשי offers another reading: one beam on bent pegs, joined by both לבוד and חבוט together. Then רבי זכאי teaches that the space between the לחיים and under the קורה is a כרמלית, and רבי יוחנן rejects this. אביי says carrying is still forbidden between the לחיים, while רבא permits it there too. Each side brings proofs, and רבא deflects the proofs from רב and from רבי יוחנן by saying they deal with an alley that opens into a כרמלית. The entrance space merges with a כרמלית because it is similar to it (מצא מין את מינו), but it does not merge with רשות הרבים.

The steps (23)

  1. ProofThe ברייתא on a beam drawn away or suspended
  2. ChallengeReading the ברייתא as an inside beam
  3. RejectionBoth cases are inside, with one gap or two
  4. ResolutionWhy the ברייתא needed the two-sided case
  5. Resolutionרב אשי: One beam that is both drawn away and suspended
  6. ResolutionThe new teaching: we apply both לבוד and חבוט together
  7. Statementרבי זכאי: The area under the beam and between the side posts is a כרמלית
  8. Rejectionרבי יוחנן rejects the teaching
  9. Statementאביי: רבי יוחנן's rejection applies only to the area under the beam
  10. Statementרבא: Even between the side posts carrying is permitted
  11. Proofרבא's proof: A place smaller than four by four is not a כרמלית
  12. Rejectionאביי pushes back: רב דימי's case was about a raised spot
  13. Proofאביי's proof from רב: the doorway needs another side post
  14. ChallengeA possible escape: maybe the doorway was a large area
  15. Proofרב said it applies even to a small area
  16. Rejectionרבא answers: רב's case was an opening facing a כרמלית
  17. ChallengeWould an opening to the public domain then be more lenient?
  18. ResolutionLike joins like: the entrance merges with the כרמלית
  19. Challengeרב הונא challenges רבא using רבי יוחנן
  20. ChallengeBoth sides agree the space between the posts is forbidden
  21. Resolutionרבא says רבי יוחנן's case also opens into a כרמלית
  22. ChallengeWould an alley opening into the public domain be more lenient?
  23. ResolutionYes, because like joins with like
