The perforated pot (גט on a leaf, קנין, border of ארץ ישראל) and the three stages of hide for writing a גט
Overview
This amud opens by finishing the argument about a גט written on a leaf growing in a perforated pot (עציץ נקוב). אביי says it is valid because the whole pot can be handed over. רבא says it is invalid, by גזירה, in case the husband cuts the leaf off. The גמרא then teaches the rules of קנין for such a pot. The plants count like land and the pot is movable, so חזקה on the plants also acquires the pot, but חזקה on the pot alone acquires nothing. Next, אביי and רבא argue whether a pot on the border of ארץ ישראל follows its hole or its branches. The גמרא limits their argument to a plant that has not rooted, and defends this against challenges from the terraced gardens and from a tree growing across the border. Finally, the גמרא returns to the משנה. עולא defines three stages of hide (מצה, חיפה, דיפתרא), each with its own size for carrying on שבת. The amud ends by asking who the חכמים are who validate such a גט, and רבי אלעזר's answer continues on the next amud.
