תקנות of רבן גמליאל הזקן: names in a גט and a widow's vow to collect her כתובה
Overview
The amud opens by closing the previous discussion: the הלכה follows נחמני (אביי). A new משנה teaches that a גט was once written only with the names the couple used locally. רבן גמליאל הזקן enacted that it say 'and any name he has / she has,' for תיקון העולם. The גמרא explains that people overseas had asked him what to do when a man is called by different names in different places. רב אשי limits the rule to a man known to have two names, and a ברייתא about a man with two wives in יהודה and גליל proves him right. The חכמי נהרדעא add that the name a woman is mainly called must come first. The next משנה lists more תקנות: a widow collects her כתובה from orphans by making a vow instead of a שבועה, witnesses sign the גט, and הלל enacted the פרוזבול. The גמרא asks why the משנה mentions a widow specifically, and its answer continues on the next amud.
