Holy scrolls bought from or written by a גוי or a מין, and the משנה on not remarrying a wife divorced for a שם רע or a נדר

Overview

The amud opens with the end of a משנה: we may not buy ספרים, תפילין and מזוזות from גוים for more than their value, because of תיקון העולם. רב בודיא suggests this proves that a ספר תורה found with a גוי may be read from, but רב אשי answers that we may buy it only to put it away. רב נחמן then gives a tradition sorting ספרי תורה written by, or found with, a מין or a גוי into ones that are burned, put away, or read from. The גמרא sees three ברייתות clash over a scroll written by a גוי. It explains that each follows a different תנא: רבי אליעזר, רב המנונא's ברייתא, and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל. It then shows that רבן שמעון בן גמליאל's case in צידן involved a גר who hid his Judaism out of fear. Next, a ברייתא allows paying up to an איסתירא above value, and a story about אביי shows the danger of offering too little. A new משנה follows: a man who divorces his wife because of a שם רע or a נדר may not remarry her, with views from רבי יהודה, רבי מאיר and רבי אלעזר, and a story from צידן. The גמרא begins with רב נחמן's condition that the husband must state his reason, and this discussion continues on the next amud.
