Topic

Remarrying a divorced wife after a vow or after divorcing her as an אילונית, and the rule against redeeming a man who sells himself to גוים.

Overview

The amud finishes explaining the משנה about a husband who vowed 'קונם if I do not divorce you.' רב הונא explains that he forbade all food in the world on himself unless he divorced her. The גמרא explains why the משנה needs to say he may remarry her, using רבי נתן's harsh view of vows. רב ששת and רבינא then argue over where the phrase מפני תיקון העולם belongs. Next comes a new משנה: may a man remarry a wife he divorced as an אילונית? רבי יהודה says no and the חכמים say yes. The גמרא points out that this seems to reverse their opinions from the earlier vow משנה. שמואל swaps the names, אביי explains רבי יהודה's vow ruling with special reasons, and רבא adds that the חכמים here are רבי מאיר, who needs a תנאי כפול. A third משנה rules that a man who sells himself to גוים is not redeemed. רב אסי limits this to someone who sold himself three times, and stories about רב הונא and רבי אמי test the rule, with the second story continuing on the next amud.
